CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND INFORMATION ONLINE REGARDING WHERE, WHEN WHY FIRES OFTEN OCCUR IN RESIDENTIAL FIRES. HOUSEHOLD INCOME AND THE RACE OF THESE FOLKS, AND INFORMATION TO PREVENT THESE FIRES IN THE DETROIT METRO AREA?

Mr. Griffen

Stats for fires can be obtained from the Bureau of Fire Services and this should be the link to the 2008 stats of reporting departments http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dleg/Non-Reporting_FDs2008_247019_7.pdf

Part of your request is not obtained by the reporting system (NFIRS). Race is typically not captured. There is no doubt that there is a fire problem in Southeast Michigan. Part of the ways to help reduce the fire problem is education, working smoke alarms with residential sprinkler systems. Support of the public on these initiatives will go a long way. There are some lobbying firms that really don’t want to see the fire and building codes improved to help our areas reduce these fires.

One of the best things you can do is make sure your fire department is supported, properly staffed in all divisions, and help promote working smoke alarms and residential fire sprinklers in the home!
