Chemical Fire at Hamtramck Plant

by mobrian on August 27, 2009

Detroit, Highland Park assist Hamtramck Fire Department

A large fire is still burning in Hamtramck which has resulted in a partial closure of I-75 with evacuations. The fire at the Sterling Services building which is involved in Bio-Fuel has drawn resources from Hamtramck Fire Department, with mutual aid from Detroit and Highland Park fire departments.

The detroit news media is reporting that intial reports have indicated the fire started in the area where truck loading occurs.  Marathon oil is reporting to provide additional foam to the fire department.  The fire is believed to have involved possible diesel fuel or gasoline.

From some of the camera views it appears the fire has involved multiple tank rail cars with an exposure of the plant

More details to follow as they become available.
