Lawton Firefighter not Wearing Seat belt, In Critical Condition

Sunday Morning, Mattawan Fire Department (located near Paw Paw on the west side of the State) requested a Lawton Fire Department Tanker, while in-route to a barn fire, the tanker lost control and flipped over.

The driver of the apparatus (26 year old) was heading north bound on CR 657 near 66th Ave, when he lost control.  Reports indicate that the tanker went off the road and then overturned.  The passenger appears to have been thrown from the tanker and is still in critical condition.

The driver was treated and released (wearing his seatbelt).  The driver was cited for traveling to fast for road conditions. Police blame both his speed and the icy road conditions for the accident.

They two were in-route to assist a barn fire which started around 8 a.m. Sunday.  The fire was located on the 27000 block of 49thAve in Mattawan. Upon arrival the Mattawan fire department reported a fully involved barn fire.  Response was hampered by the early morning ice due to overnight freezing
